“I was studying in Damascus and when I got home, this war started. My Dad told me I had to come here to Iraq to stay with my brothers - they live and work here. My parents are still home in Syria. He said since I’m a girl, I needed to go. When ISIS comes together again, they will take the girls, that’s what they do. So I came here with my sister. We started walking, only a few days ago, and then we paid someone who knows the road to show us the way.” Bardarash Refugee Camp KRI

“We arrived yesterday, my three children and I. We had to leave without my husband. He left a year ago, he tried to go to Europe. But when he got to the Turkish border, he was arrested, and we haven’t heard from him since. They say he’s there because he posted on Facebook in support of Syrian Kurdish forces during the Turkish operation to take Afrin, which is Syrian land. They say if I want to know how he is, I have to come to Turkey.” Bardarash Refugee Camp Kurdistan Region of Iraq
